Your expertise with word play, diplomacy, and trading.

  • Appraise.
  • Mock.

You gain a single additional Retort Defense. You have that defense available until you use it, or until your next Prelude.

  • Retort. You speak out against a Social assault. You may retort with a normal defense or a Guard, and check against the Negotiate skill. In general you may attempt to Retort anything tagged as Social, usually indicated when something may suffer a Language penalty. You do suffer Range penalties back to who you are contesting, and if they are behind your Flank Line you suffer the usual Penalty (-2). If you are Hidden, using a retort immediately reveals you.
  • Convince. You attempt to change a target's opinion. You target one Audience, or a Personality with no Influence. This is Social, so Range, Reaction, and Language apply, and you may be Retorted. If you succeed the target switches to your Intent in a Dispute.
  • Buy. During the game, buying requires a Negotiate check. A success allows you to purchase a Reasonable item, or Inexpensive items equal to your success margin. A failure means you purchase the Reasonable item or one Inexpensive item, but it has a random Flaw. You may choose to become Strapped or give up Prosperous to buy an Expensive item instead of a Reasonable one.
  • Sell. When you attempt to sell items you roll a Complication. The base target is 10, and you must have at least 10 Reasonable items to make the attempt. Each time you check, you lose items equal to your success margin or failure margin. If you lose more items than you have to sell you lose 1 Focus. If you succeed at hitting the target, you either eliminate Strapped or gain Prosperous. Selling an Expensive item is a single check, and you eliminate Strapped or become Prosperous if you succeed. If you fail you keep the item, but lose 1 Focus.
